The fact that CBD can be used helpful against a variety of diseases is now well known. Like many other herbal remedies, in addition to its good effects, CBD can also have side effects or interactions. Everyone reacts differently to certain substances, and so it cannot be ruled out from the outset that there will be a reaction after taking CBD. In this article, you will find out what to consider when taking cannabidiol.
How Safe is CBD?
Cannabidiol, known colloquially by the abbreviation CBD, can help with various diseases. CBD is used for relaxation, to find sleep easily and to sleep through the night and to suppress appetite, for example. But CBD has many other advantages and uses.
CBD products are usually used as supplements or to help with medical problems. But more and more athletes swear by faster regeneration with the help of CBD.
Of course, in the beginning, the question arises: Does CBD have side effects? And if so, which ones? Since the scope of CBD is broad, it is important to research this issue carefully and report any possible side effects.
We have put together a shortlist so that you can find out more about the possible interactions and side effects of cannabidiol. However, CBD has few side effects and is considered an extremely safe substance.
Which side effects can occur?
According to previous studies, cannabidiol has been classified as very well tolerated by numerous doctors and experts. Side effects do not occur with normal consumption. This was also the result of a meeting of the World Health Organization's expert committee on drug addiction in November 2017. The health experts checked on the previously known studies on CBD. Here they came to the following conclusion:
CBD is not psychoactive
CBD is well tolerated by both humans and animals
CBD poses no risk to physical health
CBD does not trigger addiction, neither physically nor mentally
The WHO also examined the therapeutic potential of CBD at the conference. She sees enough evidence that CBD is an effective drug for epilepsy. In the treatment of Alzheimer's, cancer, psychosis or Parkinson's, the cannabinoid could become more and more important in the future.
However, caution should be exercised when taking CBD during pregnancy. Due to the influence of specific proteins, CBD can interfere with the normal functioning of the placenta. For this reason, pregnant women should only use cannabinoids such as CBD after carefully consulting their doctor.
List of known CBD side effects
Influence on certain enzymes during pregnancy
Low blood pressure
Inhibition of liver metabolism
Dry feeling in the mouth
Increased tremor in some people with Parkinson's disease
Increased sleepiness
Higher intraocular pressure
Problems falling asleep
Reduced appetite
Possible side effects in detail
Better sleep thanks to CBD
Occasionally it is reported that the cannabinoid causes the opposite effect, namely insomnia. This side effect can easily be prevented if the respective CBD product is not taken in the evening. A very good alternative is to drink a soothing hemp tea an hour before bed.
CBD oil during pregnancy
As already written above, caution is advised here, as CBD can impair the complete placenta function. In some cell experiments, CBD has been found to affect both P-glycoprotein and breast cancer resistance protein. Because these proteins play a role in the proper functioning of the placenta, CBD is not recommended during pregnancy, even in small doses.
The memory of zebrafish
Experiments on zebrafish take place again and again and usually produce astonishing results.
For this experiment, adult zebrafish in Brazil were given high doses of CBD. There were regular training courses in which the memory performance of the fish was tested. More precisely, whether the memory of zebrafish functioned worse or perhaps even better under the regular influence of CBD.
Another group of fish received caffeine as a control group for a longer period of time. The negative effects described were less.
In our opinion, the study is not very meaningful because the experiment was carried out on zebrafish, whose behavior does not really match that of humans. However, this experiment also showed that CBD had almost no negative effects.
Increased tremor in Parkinson's patients
Some Parkinson's patients report significantly more tremors after taking CBD, while others experience no worsening. It is appropriate that you consult your doctor before taking CBD. In general, some studies confirm that CBD can play a crucial role in Parkinson's in the next few years.
Dry feeling in the mouth
Another side effect of CBD is a dry mouthfeel, similar to what happens when you consume THC. This result appears to be due to the involvement of the endocannabinoid system (EBS) in inhibiting saliva production. Activating certain receptors alters saliva production, which can lead to dry mouth. Drinking plenty of water after ingestion can help.
Low blood pressure
Higher doses can lead to a slight drop in blood pressure. This generally occurs within a few minutes after taking the CBD. This drop in blood pressure is often accompanied by a feeling of tiredness. If you are on antihypertensive drugs, you should consult your doctor before taking CBD. However, drinking a cup of coffee or tea can often correct this side effect.
Sleepiness
In higher doses, CBD can cause drowsiness. However, this side effect of CBD has hardly been proven and remains controversial. If you get unusually tired after taking it, do not use machines or drive vehicles.
No side effects with normal use
All of these side effects of CBD oil have not been fully proven, and a metastatic study found that CBD drops are safe for humans and animals. Cannabidiol was found to be neither toxic nor negative in untransformed cells.
Long-term studies on the side effects of CBD are not yet available - accordingly, no binding statements are made.
What about paradoxical reactions?
Cannabis has a two-phase effect: there are the described and known aspects of relaxation up to and including activation, whereby CBD, as mentioned here, has a physical effect. However, even with very high doses or with a particular sensitivity of the consumer, these sensations can be turned into the opposite! Paranoia and anxiety attacks are not as rare as they seem, but these paradoxical effects can easily be ruled out with the right dose and some caution when consuming. There are reports that low doses increase alertness, and CBD is often only dosed higher when users are trying to fall asleep.
CBD side effects from low-quality products
The use of cannabidiol (CBD) is associated with very few side effects. However, there is a potential health hazard in poor quality CBD products. These can be contaminated with chemicals. Commercial CBD products are available in different qualities. Unfortunately, it is difficult for consumers to see which products are trustworthy. An investigation by Argen Canna from 2017 that the manufacturer's information regarding the CBD content of their products cannot always be trusted.
Consumers can protect themselves primarily through the use of organic CBD products. So you are already on the safe side that no pesticides or other chemical additives are contained in the CBD product. In addition, a trustworthy dealer should, of course, always be used. In general, almost every user on the internet has a dealer who specializes in natural products and whose natural remedies are of very good quality. Of course, new things can be tried, but this is where you should hear recommendations from friends and family so that you can get really good and high quality. CBD side effects from inferior products can thus be ruled out.
Cannabis is still an important helper for a wide variety of diseases and ailments. This also shows that it is now used by a large number and the reviews on the Internet are consistently positive. Of course, CBD side effects can also occur, which are usually caused by too high a dosage. Starting with small doses, however, it is usually to be expected with few side effects from CBD. Only the loss of appetite can be problematic, especially in critically ill people or people with bulimia, which is why CBD should be avoided here.
